Does Erection Return After Prostate Removal?

This depends on the type of surgery. In laser treatment of benign prostatic enlargement (HoLEP/ThuLEP), the nerves responsible for erection are usually preserved since they are not touched during the procedure, and erectile ability remains as it was before surgery in the vast majority of cases. In radical prostatectomy for cancer, the return of erection depends on how well the nerve bundles surrounding the gland could be preserved during surgery (nerve-sparing surgery), and full erectile recovery can take anywhere from several months to two years, with medications or supportive treatments possibly used during this period.

Does Ejaculation Return After Removal?

In laser BPH surgery, the sensation of orgasm continues after the procedure, but the semen usually does not exit externally and instead goes into the bladder (retrograde ejaculation) due to removal of tissue surrounding the bladder outlet — this change is permanent in most cases and is an expected side effect of the procedure, not a serious complication. After complete radical removal for prostate cancer, there is no ejaculation at all because the glands responsible for producing semen are completely removed, though the sensation of orgasm continues without fluid release.

Does Taking Viagra Affect the Prostate?

No, erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra (sildenafil) cause no harm to the prostate and do not affect its size or health. In fact, drugs from the same family (such as low-dose daily tadalafil) are sometimes used to treat BPH symptoms themselves alongside their role in improving erection, under medical supervision. These medications are also sometimes used after prostate surgery to help speed up sexual function recovery. A doctor should be consulted before use, especially with existing heart conditions or other medications.
